Since I have been a massage therapist I feel that it is very important that my oil is 100% natural with no added impurities. This means I pay a little bit extra but it is totally worth it.
Cheaper products often contain preservatives, chemicals and fragrances which can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. I always have an unperfumed base oil (100% bio pure cold-pressed almond oil) and others with lighter fragrances such as lavender, rose and red clover. The client’s preference is dependent on the fragrance I use. I personally am a fan of softer smelling oils.
A good quality oil has a good texture and feel whilst you are being massaged (and a little goes a long way) whilst cheaper products tend absorb quicker into the skin and feel sticky or greasy so reapplication is often necessary. A good quality oil provides a good balance between absorption and glide meaning less repeat application even on those with dry skin. (text continues below the photos)

Higher quality oils nourish the skin and keep it moisturized meaning that you can feel the benefits of smooth and supple skin even after the massage is over.
Where do I buy my products?
I buy from Volatile. They are 100% natural and have a wide variety of oils to choose from.
As a treat I sometimes buy 100% natural body butters from Rebel Massage Therapist based in California. The body butters are my favourites, with quirky names like “For Your Inflammation”, “Snore”, “Sore Loser” and “Shea My Name” but the postage costs are expensive!
So, to answer the question ‘Is the quality of massage oil important?’ I say: for me, yes!
