Over the years I am often asked the same questions before, during or after the massage. Here are a few of them:
Why does my stomach make gurgling noises? (whilst lying face up on the massage table).
This puzzled me too and I had to do a bit of research.
This is completely normal and there is no need to be embarrassed about it! This is a sign that you are completely relaxed. It’s called a “parasympathetic state” or in other words “rest and digest”. Your breathing slows, your heart rate drops a little and your digestive tract wakes up. Blood flow increases to your digestive organs and relaxes the digestive muscles. This is a natural process, a good sign that your digestive system is working and you are relaxed. So gurgling is good!
I’m pregnant, can I lie face down (prone)? Yes! During the first weeks of pregnancy if it’s comfortable for you. Many pregnant ladies who I massage choose to lie on their stomachs if they are still able during the very early stages of pregnancy. Placing a pillow under the stomach is also sometimes more comfortable. Read my blog about pregnancy and massage tables.
What is a pressure point?
Pressure points are often where blood vessels are nearest the surface of the skin. Applying pressure to these areas help promote blood flow around the body, helping to relieve strain, pain and tension.
What is a trigger point?
Trigger points are painful “knots” in the bands of your muscles and can be anywhere on the body. They can be the result of repetitive acute trauma (ligament sprain, whiplash) or repetitive micro-trauma (typing, poor posture). By applying direct pressure to these trigger point areas helps alleviate the pain and reduce tension.
Do I have to drink water after my massage?
If you are thirsty then yes, you can drink some water. But drinking water does not, in my opinion and research, wash away the toxins after a massage. It happens anyway with or without a massage. Read my blog about drinking water after a massage.
